ERASMUS+ PROJECT

ONLINE ADAPTIVE INTERNATIONAL PROGRESS TEST

Maastricht University is the coordinator for an ERASMUS+ project, funded by the EU, which aims to develop Adaptive Progress Testing.

What is the benefit op Adaptive Progress Testing?

You may be aware that current Progress Testing has many advantages, one of which is enhancing long-term memory. However, Adaptive Progress Testing goes a step further and enables individual customization of the progress test, by using an algorithm that dynamically selects the difficulty of the next item based on whether previous questions in the test have been answered correctly or not. This aligns the difficulty of the questions closer to the level of knowledge of each individual student, making the measurements of student performance more reliable, whilst also enabling the removal of negative marking.  If we manage to collect enough data and demonstrate the validity of this method then we plan to adopt adaptive progress testing for all medical students.

Other partner institutions are: University Medical Centre Groningen (The Netherlands), Universidade de Minho (Braga, Portugal), University of Exeter (UK), University of Helsinki (Finland), Medical University of Lodz (Poland), Jagiellonian University (Krakow, Poland) and University of Plymouth (UK).

 Forthcoming Pilots

The pilot phase for this project will consist of 4 formative progress tests: October (9 & 30) 2019, around April 2020, November 2020, and April 2021. The first two tests will be linear, enabling us to calibrate all the items within the question bank at different partner institutions. Tests 3 and 4 will be adaptive.

We would like to encourage all medical students across all years to take part in these tests. However, you may also take part in one, two or all of them. Each test will contain 150 questions and will take about 2 hours to complete.

Benefits for our students

  • All these tests are formative and, therefore, they will help students to practice their knowledge across the whole curriculum.
  • The participation in this adaptive progress test gives you the opportunity for an additional experience in Progress Testing.
  • This is a great opportunity to experience questions that have been blueprinted across many medical schools in Europe
  • This test should be useful preparation for students undertaking the national Medical Licensing Assessment or any other assessment in future years. Questions will be used from an Erasmus+ bank and students will be able to practice on non-home written items.
  • Students will receive feedback on their performance within 24 hours.
  • Students who decide to participate in all four tests will obtain more detailed feedback after the last test and certification confirming participation in an international research project.

Reward
